On the afternoon of September 22, 2003, President Hu Jintao held talks with Cameroon President Paul Biya at the Great Hall of the People. The two sides exchanged views on bilateral relations and issues of common concern, and reached broad consensus.
Hu said that since the establishment of diplomatic relations 32 years ago, despite great changes in the international situation and domestic situations, bilateral relations have developed steadily, with close high-level contacts, positive results in cooperation in various fields, and mutual support and coordination in international affairs. We appreciate the Cameroon government's adherence to the One China policy and support of China's reunification cause.
Hu said that Cameroon is an important country in central Africa, and an important cooperation partner of China's in that region. In order to further promote the development of China-Cameroon relations in the new century, the Chinese side proposes the following: to strengthen exchanges of high-level visits and goodwill contacts at various levels in bid to increase mutual understanding and deepen friendship; to expand economic cooperation and trade between the two countries and actively explore new approaches and channels for mutual cooperation; to tighten consultation and cooperation in international affairs and cooperate to safeguard the interests and rights of developing countries.
Biya said that he visited China three times in the past 16 years. Every time he was deeply impressed with the bilateral long-term friendly relations and cooperation of trust and vitality, and saw with his own eyes the new achievements the Chinese people had made in their national construction. He said that the China-Cameroon cooperation in fields like politics, trade, medical care and infrastructure construction was fruitful, noting such cooperation had set a good example for cooperation among developing countries. The Cameroon people thank the Chinese people for the friendly assistance and support in the past years. We fully agree with the Chinese proposal on how to further develop bilateral friendly cooperation, and would like to work with the Chinese side to open a new chapter in bilateral relations.
Hu appreciated the fact that Cameroon proceeded from its national realities, actively explored a development path suited to its own national conditions and made a series of effective domestic and foreign policies. It has maintained social stability and ethnic unity, realized sustained economic growth, played a positive role in regional and international affairs and contributed to peace and development in central Africa.
Hu briefed the guest on China's views on the current international situation and stressed that China always proceeded from the strategic high of maintaining world peace, strengthening South-South cooperation and promoting common development, and promoted China-Africa relations. China would like to work with developing countries including Cameroon to strengthen unity, expand cooperation, jointly promote the democratization of international relations and push economic globalization to develop in the direction favorable to developing countries.
Biya said that Cameroon and China share broad consensus in international affairs and cooperate closely. Cameroon attaches great importance to China's expanding role and influence, and hopes to further strengthen bilateral coordination and cooperation in international affairs.
After the talks, the two presidents attended a signing ceremony for three cooperation agreements including one on economic and technological cooperation.
